About head lice Head lice control
ASD's Nurse Health Manual explains the district's procedures for managing head lice infestations. This past spring, ASD revised its head lice policy, based on recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and local pediatricians. The revision allows a child to stay the rest of the day at school after live lice are discovered rather than immediately sending that child home. When a live louse is found, chances are it did not hatch that same day, but possibly days ago, so any exposure to other children is likely to have already occurred once lice was discovered. If a child is found with live lice, other children in the classroom will be checked, as necessary if they are showing symptoms. Only parents of the child with lice will be notified. That child will not be able to return to school until free of live lice. The district will not send lice notification letters home to all parents and has not done so in several years. The presence of lice is not a public health emergency; lice do not carry disease. Rather, it is nothing more than a public nuisance. It has been found that schools are typically not a major spread of lice. However, this is the season for head lice, parents are encouraged to check their child regularly. |
