Schools-Within-A-School
Bartlett High School,
Humanities Interdisciplinary Program
The Humanities Interdisciplinary Program (HIP) is
a school-within-a-school program for students in grades
10-12 at Bartlett High School that focuses on language
arts and social studies. HIP teachers present content
material in quarterly themes. During each theme, students
do hands-on projects, group activities, presentations
and workshops that apply the content material in a
relevant, integrated format. A consistent Paedeia seminar
component is also integrated into each quarter's theme.
During the second and fourth quarter, several in-depth
creative workshops are offered, and each student chooses
one to focus on for a significant period of time.

East
High School, Elitnaurvik
Elitnaurvik is a school-within-a-school program at
East High School specifically designed for Alaska Native
and American Indian students. Elitnaurvik in Yupik
means "a place to learn." The program helps
Native students adjust to the large Anchorage schools.
The primary emphasis is basic skills with a secondary
emphasis of improving attendance, cultural identification
and family outreach. Elitnaurvik provides culturally
based education, required courses with a Native emphasis,
and Native-based PE and after-school activities Elitnaurvik
students take classes both in Elitnaurvik and the standard
East High School program.
East High School, School-Within-a-School
East High's School-Within-a-School emphasizes student
responsibility and productivity. Students are expected
to develop self-reliance, to cultivate intellectual
curiosity and to seek academic challenge. Students
earn credit in a number of ways, including traditional
class work, independent studies and small group research.
Service High School, The
Seminar School
The Seminar School
at Service High that is founded on the principles of
Socratic questioning and the examination of great works
of writing. TSS teaches appreciation for the learning
process itself, as well as for the content material
being studied. The faculty stresses critical thinking
skills such as comprehensive reading, questioning strategies,
analysis of ideas and reasoning, and the synthesis
of understanding that comes from meaningful writing
exercises. Individual students take responsibility
for their learning while maintaining a sense of community
and a shared commitment to a positive learning environment.
West High School, International
Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate is a rigorous, international
k-12 curriculum. There are almost 1300 schools in 115
countries authorized to offer IB programmes, of which
there are three: the Diploma Programme for high schools,
the Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to
16, and the Primary Years Programme for students aged
3 to 12. While they form a continuous sequence, each
may be offered independently. IB's Diploma Programme
at West High is a two year, integrated set of academic
courses designed for 11th and 12th graders.
West High School, School Through
the Arts
School Through the Arts is a school-within-a-school
program at West High School. It is an academic program
infused with a firm foundation in the arts, including
visual arts, drama, dance, music and other artistic
avenues. STTA exposes students to a variety of arts
experiences by bringing visiting artists to the classroom,
scheduling artist-in-residence programs, and arranging
field trips to plays and other community events.

World Languages Immersion Program
"Immersion" differs from traditional instructional approaches
in which foreign languages are taught as separate subjects.
In this program children are "immersed" in the language
for half of the school day. English-speaking children learn
to understand, speak, read and write the target language
by hearing and using it constantly during normal classroom
activities. Care is taken to ease students into the new
language and to ensure comprehension. Progress and performance
are carefully measured. The Anchorage School District has
immersion programs in four languages: Japanese, Spanish, Russian and German. Contact the individual school for more information

German - Rilke Schule, the district’s first German immersion program school offers students the opportunity to become fluent in German in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Rilke Schule is a tuition-free charter school that is part of the Anchorage School District. Charter schools offer alternative teaching methods or curricula and more independence than regular public schools. At Rilke Schule students are immersed in the German language for half of the school day.
Japanese - Students in grades K-6 are immersed in Japanese for half of their school day; they learn Japanese culture and are taught math, science, social studies and health in Japanese. Students who are native speakers or who are continuing from Sand Lake to Mears Middle School and Dimond High School continue in the immersion program through the 12th grade. Sand Lake also houses a K-6 neighborhood program.
Mandarin Chinese - Scenic Park Elementary students participate in the Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program. They receive bi-weekly lessons in Mandarin Chinese language and culture with a native speaker teacher. For more information, call 742-1650
Spanish - There are two
elementary Spanish partial immersion programs located
at Chugiak Elementary School and Government Hill
Elementary School.
Chugiak Elementary School
Students in grades K-5 are immersed in Spanish half of the school day. Math, social studies, science and health are taught in Spanish. Students who are native speakers or who are continuing from Chugiak Elementary to Mirror Lake Middle and Chugiak High receive some content area instruction in Spanish.
Government Hill Elementary School
Students in grades K-6 may enroll in a two-way bilingual/Spanish immersion program. In the two-way model, 50 percent of the students in each classroom are native Spanish speakers and the other 50 percent are English speakers desiring to learn Spanish. Students who are native speakers or who are continuing on from Government Hill Elementary to Romig Middle and West High can continue in the Spanish immersion program.
Russian - Students in grades K-6 are immersed in Russian for half of their school day; they learn Russian culture and are taught science and social studies in Russian, language arts and math are taught in English. Students become functionally proficient in speaking, reading and writing both English and Russian. Russian-speaking students are also encouraged to enroll in the program.
